Paul helped me understand the various options available to me. I found him to be thorough, patient and he explained everything to me in plain language that I could understand. I found working with him helpful not only for the immediate decisions I needed to make, such as exploring whether or not to buy back pension service, but I also gained a better understanding of my options down the road when I start thinking more seriously about retirement. I really felt that he had my best interests at heart at all times to set me on the right path for a better retirement.

I have worked with Paul Duxbury for approximately 20 years. He provides, and has provided for almost 30 years, to our Union leadership and its members, actuarial advice regarding pensions and related issues. In particular, he is often called upon to communicate with the local union membership in our various locations regarding retirement related planning for workers of all ages, and decisions at retirement for members at or near retirement, as well as planning and decision advice on situations involving layoff, disability or death of the member. The advice he provides covers our numerous negotiated pension plans, government pensions and benefits as well as individual retirement savings and investments that extend beyond the workplace. Paul’s extensive experience with our members has included both group seminars and individual one-on-one counselling sessions.
Although Paul does not give investment advice per se, the Union and the membership have greatly appreciated the opportunity to consult with an independent, unbiased professional who is an expert in all retirement and post-employment related financial issues.

When we were ready to retire, Paul helped make sense of everything for us by thoroughly explaining all of the options we had including the pros and cons of each and made suggestions as to what would be most appropriate for our particular situation. Once we made our decisions, he helped us fill out all of the paperwork, and itemized the various payments we could watch for in our bank account. Prior to Paul’s assistance, we were quite confused since there were the government pensions (Old Age Security and the Canada Pension Plan), company pension plans and post retirement benefits, RRIFs, etc.). He certainly gave us peace of mind and regularly checks in on us. Anytime we receive a communication from the Government, he’s the first person we call and he does a great job of translating it into plain language for us. Paul has brought us great peace of mind so that we can actually enjoy our retirement as we have a good handle on our finances and what will happen when we each pass away.

After my husband of over 50 years died, Paul helped me get my finances in order. My husband had looked after all the finances and I was extremely grateful for Paul’s help. We met with the investment advisor that my husband had used for many years. Paul knew all the questions to ask and kept asking until we received clear answers. I had no idea. After listening to the questions Paul asked, I realized that the investment advisor was really just trying to sell the funds that generated the most fees, even though they weren’t appropriate for a widow in her 70’s.
